Photo Booth Groupon Deals in NJ Reviewed
Every morning our office receives the Groupon, Living Social, and Amazon Local Deals (Yes, Amazon has a deal service too) and almost every morning we see a new deal for a photo booth rental in NJ featuring a “mystery booth” at some incredible bargain – some are even in the ballpark of $250! Awesome deal right? Let’s continue…
I wanted to write this article because literally every single week (usually on a Tuesday) we get calls from frantic brides (or other event planners), that they can’t reach the photo booth company they hired from Groupon, their website is down, facebook page is deleted, and the phone number is not in service any longer. We’ve even received calls on the day of the wedding from brides literally crying on the phone that their Groupon Photo Booth didn’t show up. I wanted to shed some light on why this happens in a completely candid, open testimonial that is based on my experience and expert opinion.
I’m going to share a secret with you that let’s you in on our business. A genuine, real, photo booth costs upwards of around $10,000 to purchase (And that’s our wholesale pricing!) Add to that, the cost of printer supplies (average about $200 per event) with an attendant (let’s just say they get paid well to make sure everything is running smoothly), customer support staff (in case you have any questions), maintenance (we need to keep everything looking shiny and new for your event), truck costs, delivery costs, advertising (we don’t advertise because our biggest advertisers are our customers, but you get the idea), etc etc etc.
So if you’re keeping up with the math, our cost alone already doubles what a normal groupon deal would charge. How on Earth can these Groupon Photo Booth Companies offer their rentals at these incredibly low prices? They can’t. We attribute it to booking a hotel room with Hotwire.com. You may save some money, but you have no idea what part of town its in, what it looks like, what amenities it has, or if it’s even a hotel. What I’m trying to say is, you’ll never know what you’re buying when you rent a “mystery booth” from Groupon. I may have just let the cat out of the bag with that one, but it’s true. 99% of these so-called Groupon Photo Booth Rentals aren’t booths at all. They’re someone holding a camera, taking a picture, and putting the photos online for you to download a few weeks after your wedding, sweet 16, bar mitzvah, trade show or other event. Makes sense now how they can offer the deals at the price, right?
The same goes for Groupons offering booths for $500 or $600. Because here’s the fine print: Groupon pays the advertisers 50% of the cost of your voucher, so for that $500 groupon special, the advertiser is only receiving $250 – which just about covers the cost of the supplies. And that booth you’re getting? It’s probably not a “booth” at all, but rather someone taking photos and maybe/maybe not printing them or some ugly do-it-yourself project that malfunctions, falls apart, etc. etc.
So why would any established company run a Groupon deal? They wouldn’t. There are a lot of people out there that are handy with a hammer and tools and build their own photo booths. The problem with this is that it looks like they “built their own photo booth.” They buy a cheap $80 consumer printer at Walmart, a point-and-shoot digital camera or webcam, and take your money. (Sidenote – To give you an idea of what a real photo booth printer costs, ours are around $2,000 each and are actual mobile photo labs that print out the photos in a matter of seconds. Not to mention that we bring a second unit as backup just in case).
